The Lara walnut was bred in France from the descendants of the American Payne walnut variety. It is high-yielding and of excellent quality. It has moderate growth and bears fruit on lateral buds, making it suitable for both smaller gardens and densely planted groves. It tolerates late spring frosts well and is resistant to fungal and bacterial diseases. It comes into production early and regularly provides a plentiful harvest. Its fruit has a thin shell and is easily cracked. The kernel is light-colored, pleasantly sweet, creamy-tasting, and high in oil content. Thanks to its high yield and excellent taste, Lara is currently one of the most popular walnut varieties in France.
